We Remember Eddie Woods
Eddie Woods loved the game of golf.
As a boy, he spent many afternoons driving golf balls from his backyard into
the woods. He lettered in golf his freshman year of high school
and began working at the Gibson Island Golf Course. He dreamed of
being a pro golfer. Eddie also loved to ski. He was a Special
Olympics ski coach for Anne Arundel County. After college, he became a
ski instructor for White Tail Ski Area. He spent his summers golfing
and his winters skiing. During this time, he was fighting his own
special battle.
The Special Olympics Oath says "Let me
win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." Although
Eddie fought bravely, he did not win. He lost his battle with Cystic
Fibrosis in the fall of 1994. He was 25 years old. Eddie was an
inspiration to all who knew him, just as our athletes are to all who know
them. We have chosen to honor Eddie's memory by naming this tournament
after him. Eddie's family continues to stay active in Special Olympics
Anne Arundel County.
In Memoriam - Tyler Hamrick
Special Olympics Anne Arundel County lost a close friend and a good athlete in Tyler Hamrick when he passed away in July, 2011.
Tyler, who participated in golf skills and in other sports, will be missed by everyone in our organization. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Special Olympics Anne Arundel County is a year round sports
program for children and adults with intellectual
disabilities. Training and competition is offered throughout the year in
more than 15 sports (including golf). Athletes may advance to state and to
international levels of competition.
In the early 1960's, the concept for Special Olympics was
started by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in Rockville, Maryland. Anne Arundel
County began its program in 1970. Our goal is to integrate our athletes
into society under the conditions that they are accepted, respected, and given
the chance to become more productive citizens.
Special Olympics Anne Arundel County is a volunteer program with
all funds going to equip and train our athletes. We receive no public
funding; our support comes exclusively from individuals, organizations, and
corporations. The Annual Eddie Woods Golf Tournament is the primary fund
raising event for our county program.
